|vintage TV pinata here. so. cool.|
One of the things my husband and I look forward to every week is watching our favorite TV shows together, and they all happen to land on Thursday nights (of course… that’s the spot all the best shows get!) I know that many people wouldn’t count watching TV and getting takeout as a date, but I do. Why? I think the magic in it comes from making a weekly tradition like this one a priority, something you and your significant other share a love for.
We started the ritual of getting a $5 Pizza from Little Caesars or Domino’s to eat while we watched our shows because while we were students we’d both get home just in time for the shows to start and trying to make dinner at the same time meant one of us had to miss it. (We don’t have DVR or Tivo, so there is no pausing!) This became our favorite night of the week, even before weekends. Now we both make sure not to plan other things on Thursday nights because that is our time to be together. During the summer when our Thursday shows aren’t on, we get into other series’ with Netflix or DVD’s from the library. (Arrested Development! Big Bang Theory! Friends!) It’s simple, but it’s something we love to do and even though we don’t have kids yet, I know that we will continue this tradition far into the future. Hopefully when we do have kids they’ll enjoy it too. There is something special about creating your own traditions as a couple and a family. They bring you closer and strengthen bonds, and it is definitely easier to be consistent with something that doesn’t cost much unlike a date night on the town which can sometimes add up quickly. In case you are interested, we love: Parks & Rec, Up All Night, Modern Family (actually a Wednesday show) and Person of Interest. We’re still mourning the loss of 30 Rock and The Office.
Anyone else love watching TV with their significant other? What are some of the shows you love to watch together? (I welcome recommendations.)
