Hi! Sara here from Stripes and Polka Dots! I’m excited to be back to share with you another beginners sewing tutorial. Today I’m sharing this super basic tutorial on how to make these adorable ribbon headbands. In the past I’ve shared tutorials that often require some basic sewing knowledge and a sewing machine, but today’s sewing project is for the most beginner of sewers. You don’t even need a sewing machine, just a thread and needle will work great!
Here are the supplies you’ll need:
needle and thread (or sewing machine)
I scored this adorable ribbon in the dollar section at Target if you can believe it, but you can find tons of cute ribbon at almost an craft stores, such as: Joann’s, Micheal’s, Hobby Lobby, etc.
First, you’ll want to measure the circumference around your head. Then cut your piece of ribbon the length of half of your total head circumference. The other half will be the measurement of your elastic minus 2-3 inches (depending on how stretchy your elastic is or how tight you want your headband to be). For example, my head measured to be about 22 inches. I cut my ribbon at 11″ and my elastic at 9″.
Next you’ll sew your elastic securely to the ribbon. There is really no precise science to this part. Like I said before, you can either use your sewing machine (if you have one) or sew it by head. Either method works great! Within minutes you have a totally adorable headband! I even whipped up a few of these for my daughter.
