In a large bowl or stand mixer combined butter and cream cheese. Beat until smooth and well combined.
Add in salt and vanilla extract and stir to combine.
Gradually add in powdered sugar until completely combined. See notes to determine how much powdered sugar to use.

How much powdered sugar should I use?Powdered sugar will largely determine the thickness of your frosting. For a thinner, more glaze like consistency use 2 cups. I typically use 3 cups for cakes and cookies. If you want the frosting to be sturdier for piping designs etc. you will want to use 4 cups. Add a little at a time to determine what best suits your needs. If your frosting becomes to thick, add a tablespoon at a time of milk or cream to thin out.
