Prepare one batch of sugar cookie dough and allow it to chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. While it chills, gather ingredients needed for the "tie-dye" process.
Separate dough into 4 bowls.
Add 8-10 drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix until color is well blended.
Clean countertop thoroughly and then dust it with a thin layer of flour.
Take a nickle sized amount of each dough and roll it into one ball.
Roll dough between your hands to make a snake-shaped long piece of dough. Lay it on the counter and roll it into a spiral.
Place onto a cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper.
Bake at 375 degrees F. 8-10 minutes until done.
Cool for 2 minutes on the pan before removing cookies to a rack to cool.

Notes
We love this recipe for traditional soft sugar cookies. If you want to use a mix instead of dough made from scratch, we recommend using a 17.5 oz bag of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie mix. Make sure to clean your countertop thoroughly and dust it with a thin layer of flour before you start rolling the cookie dough into designs. Cookie dough can be sticky. Add more flour to the countertop as needed while you work.
