Raise your hand if you own one of these storage shelves. They abound at places like IKEA and Target and I am pretty sure at least 50% of the english speaking world owns one. They're perfectly functional and not bad looking by any means. I decided I wanted to jazz mine up with some pretty storage bins. I had been looking around but hadn't found anything yet when the inspiration hit me yesterday.

I saw these cute candy striped baskets on Pinterest, and I loved them. Of course they are from Anthropologie and of course they cost an arm and a leg.

I set out to find some striped baskets like those for a better price. I found some cute ones at Hobby Lobby, but they were still out of my price range. Then I realized I could probably just paint the plain ones that come in packs of 4 for $20. Yes. That is more like it.

I also decided to embellish the handles a little bit. I wanted them to be leather but even faux leather handles were expensive to buy so I found this faux leather ribbon at Joann's and just glued it on.  So here's how I went about it:

    Materials you need:

    Fabric storage bins
Painter's Tape (I use scotch blue)
    Paint
    Sponge paint brush
    Faux leather ribbon
    Glue gun

Step 1: Tape stripes onto your bin. Pay attention to how you tape as that determines how many stripes you will have. I taped two of mine as seen below, which resulted in three stripes, and then two of them the opposite way, which resulted in four stripes.

Step 2: Paint carefully. Let dry for 30 minutes to an hour.

    Step 3: Remove tape.

Step 4: Hot glue strips of faux leather ribbon onto bin handles.

I love how this project turned out! It was so easy too. You guys know that's my kind of project. Did you spy any other easy projects in these photos? My DOPE letters and DIY gold dipped mirror frame might have made appearances! Okay they did.

The hardest thing about this project was deciding what color stripes to paint. I am so glad I went with yellow, but I am sure they would have been great in so many colors. What color would you choose?

Hi- love your site! Love the baskets! Did you just do stripes on the front or all sides? And where do you find the plain baskets, the ones that are 4 for $20??
