Oatmeal Scotchies Recipe Substitutions & Additions
- Butterscotch Chips: Instead of using traditional butterscotch chips, you can try substituting them with white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or peanut butter chips for a different flavor twist.
- Sweeteners: If you want to reduce the sugar content or are looking for alternative sweeteners, you can use honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar instead of brown sugar in the recipe. Keep in mind that the flavor and texture of the cookies may vary slightly with these substitutions.
- Flour: To make your oatmeal Scotchie cookies gluten-free, you can use a gluten-free flour blend or almond flour instead of all-purpose flour. Make sure to use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend for a seamless substitution.
Scotchies Cookies Tips
I use this cookie dough scoop for all my cookies and it is the best thing EVER.
Someone gave us the cookie scoop for our wedding and now I gift them all the time! It's a game changer. Mine is 2" but you can buy them in three packs, I have the biggest one on my wish list!
Oatmeal Scotchie Cookies storage
- Allow Cookies to Cool: Let the oatmeal Scotchie cookies cool completely on a wire rack after baking. This helps prevent condensation inside the storage container.
- Use an Airtight Container: Transfer the cooled cookies to an airtight container. You can use a cookie jar, a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid, or a resealable plastic bag.
- Layer with Parchment Paper: If you need to stack the cookies in the container, place a sheet of parchment paper between the layers to prevent them from sticking together.
- Add a Slice of Bread: To help keep the cookies soft and chewy, you can add a slice of bread to the container. The cookies will absorb moisture from the bread, which will keep them from becoming too dry.
- Store at Room Temperature: Oatmeal Scotch cookies are best stored at room temperature. Avoid placing them in the refrigerator, as this can make them go stale faster.
- Consume Within a Week: Oatmeal Scotchie cookies can typically stay fresh for up to a week when stored properly. If you want to keep them for a longer period, you can freeze them.
- If you Plan to Freeze the Cookies: wrap them individually or place them in a freezer-safe container or bag, ensuring they are airtight. They can be stored in the freezer for up to three months. When you're ready to enjoy them, simply let them thaw at room temperature.
Scotchies FAQs
Below you will find answers to some of our frequently asked questions about these oatmeal scotcheroos.
Butter Temperature: The temperature of your butter can greatly affect the texture of your cookies. If the butter is too soft or melted when you mix it with sugar, it can cause the cookies to spread too much. Make sure your butter is at the right temperature, which is slightly softened but not melted. You can also try using cold butter and creaming it longer with the sugar to add more air.
Overmixing: Overmixing the cookie dough can lead to flat cookies. When you overmix, you develop more gluten in the dough, which can result in a thinner texture. Mix the ingredients until just combined, and avoid excessive mixing.
Room Temperature: The temperature of your kitchen can impact how cookies bake. If it's very warm, the cookies may spread more than desired. Consider chilling the cookie dough for 30 minutes to an hour before baking. This can help the cookies maintain their shape.
Overbaking: Overbaking cookies is one of the most common reasons for dryness. Cookies continue to cook a bit even after you take them out of the oven due to residual heat. Make sure to follow the recommended baking time in your recipe and check for doneness a minute or two before the suggested time to prevent overbaking. If your oven typically runs hot, keep a close eye on your first batch for doneness.
Too Much Flour: Using too much flour can make your cookies dry and crumbly. Measure your flour accurately using the spoon-and-level method. Fluff the flour with a spoon, lightly spoon it into the measuring cup, and level it off with a flat edge.
Ingredient Quality: Using low-quality or expired ingredients can affect the texture and moisture of your cookies. Make sure your ingredients are fresh and of good quality.
The same issues listed above can contribute to the cookies being too hard. Avoid overtaking, too much flour, and make sure you are using the freshest ingredients for the softest quality of oatmeal cookies.
