I am always looking for ways to make cleaning bathrooms a quick and easy job. These fizzy toilet bombs I made recently are making my cleaning routine much easier.

What are Toilet Bombs?

Toilet bombs are essentially like bath bombs but a toilet bomb will freshen up your toilet!

These fizzy toilet bombs are made with just three ingredients, plus essential oil if you'd like to add a scent.

They are super easy to make You just mix everything together, let them set, and you're good to go.

I just love them, and I know you're gonna love them too. *This post contains affiliate links.

How they work

Just throw one toilet bomb into the toilet bowl whenever there is an unpleasant smell or you feel like your toilet could use some freshening up.

The bomb will fizz up, remove smells, and help dissolve unwanted 'leftovers' from your toilet bowl the next time you flush.

How to Make Toilet Bombs

Toilet Bomb Instructions

  1. Add baking soda and citric acid to a mixing bowl and use a fork or whisk to break up clumps. Baking soda naturally cleans and eliminates odors, making it the perfect base for the fizzies.
  2. Now SLOWLY drop by drop, add hydrogen peroxide to the baking soda. If you add it all at once, you'll have a big mess due to the reaction between the baking soda and citric acid!
  3. Now add the essential oil and gently mix. This is just for scent, so you can choose any scent you like. I used lavender. Use a half teaspoon to scoop the mixture into your candy molds, and press in gently with your fingers. You don't want to fill them completely full, because this will expand. Let dry for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  4. Place the dried toilet bombs in a glass jar and keep them sealed near your toilet.

Make sure you label these and keep them out of reach of small children and pets.

I used heart-shaped candy molds to make these because I thought it would be cute (and I think I was right!) but you can also just use a teaspoon or something to shape them. It is up to you.

I like to keep a jar of these in each bathroom! I love the lavender scent personally, but you can use any essential oil to make them smell good.

Toilet Bombs FAQ

How long do fizzy toilet bombs last?

They last 3-4 months and they should keep working as long as you keep them in a sealed container.

Notes

I prefer to use lavender, lemon, rosemary or peppermint essential oils.
Lavender Doterra is the brand I have used. The smell lasts quite a while for me with this oil. I can't speak to how long the scent of any other brands might last.

I made three batches today! Having made similar before, I knew that the indoor humidity affects these greatly; each batch I made came out completely different with my fluctuating humidity - on my second batch I had to use twice the amount of liquid as the morning got drier (I made the batches back to back, but it fluctuated that much!). I found using a syringe really helps to control the drops as you add them, and prevents that accidental oops of dripping the liquid in too quickly. They turned out really cute, and with my few that didn't come out of the mold the right way, I just put in a jar with a little scoop - it still does the trick. Thanks for the recipe!

  2. Made these and they didn’t work at all. Just sat in the bottom of the toilet and bubble. No fizz or cleaning :(

  3. I made them .. they work perfectly ... the trick is to add the vinegar mixture very very slowly .. pour a bit then stir , pour a bit more then stir .. you want it to be the texture of snow when you place it on the molds.

  4. Any ideas on why they ain't fizzing (mind I use a different recipe) i.e bicarbonate soda, citric acid, soap water and obviously essential oils, I get a slight fizz but not as good as people make them out to be and as good as shop bought ones.

  5. So I have a question??? Do you just drop these In the toilet and let sit or flush right away? I’m going to make them for Christmas gifts and when ppl ask I’d like to tell them how to use them.

      1. You should change your 'recipe' You should NEVER combine vinegar and hydrogen peroxide - it creates a toxic gas and is CORROSIVE. Just want to keep everyone safe

  6. This was a total fail for me. I did half batch as I didnt have enough molds.
They puffed up so much that I scooped some off and tried to jimmy into other trays. Needless too say that they did not fizz well. Just sat in the bowl and bubbled a little.
Second attempt, I filled the molds even less so that they would bubble out so much and they didnt rise at all! These ones also dont fizz well! What am I doing wrong? ????

      1. Making a third batch with fingers crossed. They aren't really rising this time either... So disappointed ????

    1. Try adding liquid very very slowly. You are activating it before it dries so there will be no fizz when needed. Good luck.

    2. if you add the fluid too quickly, the activation you want to happen in the toilet happens when you mix them.

These are the coolest thing! I made a batch last night using orange essential oil. Today I drove 45 minutes today to buy molds & some decorative jars. I’tbink these will make cute Christmas gifts!
One thing though, I put a few into molds made for bath bombs & when they set up they were impossible to get out. I had to soak them in the sink to dissolve them. I’m wondering if a shot of cooking spray would work?

  8. I am planning on making these for Christmas and I was wondering how many 1 batch makes. I want to make sure I have enough molds.

  9. I made these last night and they expanded and dried to the point that they were mostly airy messes. Any advice to help them keep their shape and not over expand?

  10. Hi,
It looks to me like a smashing good thing to use.
One thing though; You put it in the little shapes using your fingers.
Isn't hydrogen peroxide not dangerous enough to use gloves and safety glasses?
    Louise

    1. It's such a small amount that we didn't feel it was necessary to wear gloves and safety glasses, and we washed our hands right after. I've done it many times and never had any irritation. You definitely could though to be on the safe side!

  11. Hi, I was excited when I found these and couldn't wait to try them. I put them together last night but, they don't seem to really fizz, they just bubble a very little. I followed the directions. How much fizz should they have? I'm considering adding more vinegar. Any thoughts?
    Thank you,
    Sheryl

I was so excited to try this and to my surprise they worked really really well and my toilet is so clean. They are so cute, I'm thinking of giving them for Christmas gifts tis year. Thank you

    1. Carol Brown- I found it at Ace Hardware store for $4.99. But it was also at target and Walmart in the canning/Ball Jar area

    1. If you put these in the toliet bowl how do theyast to keep the bathroom smelling good with constant flushing?

      1. They are meant to freshen up as needed, these aren't the kind of thing that stay in the toilet between flushes.

These are the most perfect and simple way to make a bathroom fresh. And they make such a fun statement in the jar. A must have!

  13. Totally septic tank friendly when we had the system checked after moving in he actually recommended flushing baking soda once a week to keep the system healthy and suggested using citric acid to clean the toilet as it doesn't affect the health of the bacteria needed to break down waste I have been using these fizzies even before we moved to the country

  14. Hi I just made my toilet bombs and I used citrus bliss. Do you have to leave in the mold tray overnight then let it dry on baking tray?
