Harry Potter Tree Topper
Materials:
- Gold card stock paper
- Oversized bulb ornament*
- Gold spray paint* (we use Rustoleum metallic gold)
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Pencil
- optional: Cricut machine + LightGrip mat
*If you can find a nice oversized gold ornament, this project is even easier. When I was making this I couldn't find a gold one, so I used a blue ornament I found at Walmart and spray-painted it.
How to cut golden snitch wings with a Cricut machine:
- If you have a Cricut machine, grab a light grip mat, and open my design in Cricut Design Space.
- Size it for your ornament, and select 'make it.' Follow prompts to cut paper.
- Remove the paper from around the edges of the wings, then carefully peel the wings themselves off of the mat.
How to cut golden snitch wings with a pencil and scissors:
Print our wings template onto white paper or cardstock. If you can print directly onto the gold paper, that would be easier!
To print the wings template, fill out the form here, go to your email, and confirm your subscription.
To resize the wings before printing you can upload the image into google docs or word and resize the image that way.
Cut the wing template out of the white paper, trace it onto the gold paper, and then cut that out.
Spray paint and assembly instructions:
Steps 1 and 2 are only necessary if your ornament isn't gold to start with.
- Get your gold metallic spray paint and ornament outside on a surface that you can spray paint on.
- Spray paint the ornament, give it at least 2 coats. Let dry completely between coats and before gluing wings on.
- Use strong hot glue to glue wings onto the Harry Potter tree topper.
- Hold the wings on as the glue dries to avoid them sliding down or not adhering correctly.
Golden Snitch Ornaments
You could make golden snitch ornaments in the same way, just use smaller gold ornaments, and cut the wings to scale! I might make some soon to compliment my tree along with the other Harry Potter ornaments I've made. (Have you seen the flying keys!?)
Happy Christmas, Harry!
If you make a golden snitch using our tutorial, please leave a comment and a positive review! They mean a lot to us!
