    Red Velvet Brownies

Oh, I have such a deep love for these Red Velvet brownies! We make them all year round when we want a special treat. They are super easy to make and bake in about 30 minutes.

What flavor is Red Velvet? Is Red Velvet just chocolate?

The rich red color and flavor of red velvet cake make it unique. Red Velvet is different from chocolate cake.

In the past, the red color came from the chemical reaction between unprocessed cocoa and vinegar (more info at Southern Living.)

Presently the cake mixes we often use to make Red Velvet Cake or Red Velvet Brownies contain buttermilk and red 40 food coloring.

These ingredients give it a different flavor from a chocolate cake mix.

FAQs for Red Velvet Brownies from Cake Mix

Here are answers to a few frequently asked questions we get on this recipe.

Is butter or oil better for brownies?

Using oil instead of butter in brownies can yield a different texture and flavor profile. Here are a few reasons why we chose oil over butter for this recipe:

    1. Moisture: Oil has a higher fat content than butter, which means it can help keep brownies moist and tender. Brownies made with oil tend to stay softer and retain moisture for longer periods compared to those made with butter, which can sometimes become drier as they cool.

    2. Texture: Oil produces a lighter, more cake-like texture in brownies. This can be desirable for those who prefer a softer, less dense brownie. Butter, on the other hand, can lead to a denser, fudgier texture.

    3. Flavor: While butter adds its characteristic flavor to baked goods, oil has a more neutral taste. Using oil in brownies allows the cocoa and other flavors to shine through without the added flavor of butter. This can be particularly advantageous in recipes where you want the chocolate flavor to be the star.

    4. Ease of Mixing: Oil is easier to incorporate into the batter than butter, especially if you're making brownies by hand. It blends more smoothly with other ingredients, resulting in a uniform batter without the need to cream butter and sugar together.

Overall, both oil and butter have their place in brownie recipes, and the choice between them often comes down to personal preference and desired outcome in terms of texture and flavor.

What makes Brownies fudgy vs cakey?

The fudginess of brownies is largely determined by the ratio of ingredients, particularly the amount of fat and flour used. Fudgy brownies typically have a higher ratio of fat (such as butter or oil) to flour, resulting in a denser, moister texture. They often contain less flour and sometimes include ingredients like melted chocolate or cocoa powder for intense chocolate flavor. Additionally, fudgy brownie recipes may call for less leavening agents (such as baking powder or baking soda) and eggs, which helps prevent too much rise and airiness, resulting in a dense, indulgent texture reminiscent of fudge.
