Not just any caramel apples, mind you. We're talking gourmet, apple pie, oreo, and m&m caramel apples. They are really simple to make, delicious, and more importantly, perfectly budget friendly.

Gourmet Caramel Apples

Homemade caramel apples outshine store-bought versions in my eyes for several reasons. First, you can customize the caramel apple to your taste, choosing whatever flavors and toppings you like best. Second, making them at home allows you to choose high-quality, fresh ingredients, ensuring a more wholesome treat.

Third, it's a lot more cost effective to make them at home if you are planning to buy more than one fancy caramel apple. Lastly, the fun of creating them together with friends or family adds a personal touch and makes for a memorable experience that store-bought options simply can't match.

How to Make Caramel Apples

  1. Wash apples, remove stems, and thoroughly dry the apples. Refrigerate apples overnight or a few hours before using so they are nice and cold.
  2. Secure sticks into the tops of the apples. Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet
  3. Place unwrapped caramel and milk in a medium size saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the caramels are melted.
  4. Holding an apple by the stick, dip it into the caramel, continuously turning it until it is coated. (I've found it helpful to use a spoon to help smooth the caramel over the apple.  Allow any excess caramel from the bottom of the apple to drip off.  Place on cookie sheet.  Repeat with remaining apples.
  5. Place apples immediately in the refrigerator, except for the apple you will be placing M&M's on. Follow instructions in the recipe card for specific gourmet apple varieties.

Pro Tips For The Best Caramel Apples

  • To slow the ripening process and keep your apples crisp, store them in the fridge in a plastic bag.
  • Choose the Right Apples: Select firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Their texture and flavor hold up well to toppings and contrasts nicely with sweet coatings.
  • Presentation Matters: Use wooden skewers or popsicle sticks for easy handling, and consider wrapping the apples in clear cellophane or placing them in decorative boxes if gifting.

For Basic Homemade Caramel Apple

  • 6 Medium Sized Apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp Taste Best
  • 14 Ounce Bag Caramels Unwrapped
  • 2 Tablespoons Milk
  • 5 Popsicle Sticks or Wooden Skewers
  • Wax Paper

For One Apple Pie Caramel Apple

For One Oreo Caramel Apple

For One M&M Caramel Apple

  • ½ Cup M&Ms or M&M Minis

Instructions

For Basic Homemade Caramel Apple

  • Wash apples, remove stems, and thoroughly dry the apples. Refrigerate apples overnight or a few hours before using so they are nice and cold. Secure sticks into the tops of the apples.
  • Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet.  Place unwrapped caramel and milk in a medium size saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the caramels are melted. You can also melt caramel and milk in the microwave. Stir in 30 second intervals until melted.
  • Holding an apple by the stick, dip it into the caramel, continuously turning it until it is coated. I've found it helpful to use a spoon to help smooth the caramel over the apple.  Allow any excess caramel from the bottom of the apple to drip off.  Place on cookie sheet.  Repeat with remaining apples. Place apples immediately in the refrigerator, except for the apple you will be placing M&M's on.

For the M&M Caramel Apple

  • Immediately stick M&M's into the soft caramel surrounding the apple.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.

For The Apple Pie Caramel Apple

  • In a small bowl combine brown sugar and cinnamon. In another small, microwavable bowl, place the white chocolate. Microwave chocolate at 20 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until it is melted and smooth. Dip caramel apple in the melted chocolate. Use a spoon to help you cover the apple. Immediately sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on the chocolate. Refrigerate until ready to eat.

For The Oreo Caramel Apple

  • Place the white chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave at 20 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until it is melted and smooth. Dip caramel apple in the melted chocolate. Use a spoon to help you cover the apple. Immediately sprinkle crushed Oreos all over the chocolate. Refrigerate.
