This easy DIY mason jar tumbler with vinyl decals is an easy craft, perfect way to re-use a mason jar and makes a great gift!
Hey there! It's Kelly from Brush & Thread Studio and I'm so excited to share one of my favorite new projects! I saw some cute mason jar tumblers on Etsy and wanted one so badly but I just couldn't justify spending over $30 on something I thought I could make myself. I'm just the kind of person that has to "DIY before I buy!"
This project requires permanent vinyl lettering. You can make some yourself if you have a Cricut (or another cutting machine) or buy some from a small shop.
If you just want to add vinyl to a cup, we have a tutorial for how to cut and apply vinyl decals to tumblers with Cricut machine! You might also like this DIY Tumbler stickers project. Check out all of our craft ideas here.

DIY Mason Jar Tumbler
What You'll Need:
- Large Mason Jar - Similar on Amazon
- Spray Paint
- Glitter
- Mod Podge
- Permanent Vinyl Letters
- Mason Jar Straw Lid Insert
How To:
- Make sure your surface is clean and tape off the area you want to paint. Spray it with gold metallic spray paint and let it dry.
- Rub your vinyl letters onto the mason jar. Be sure to press the the vinyl down throughly since the jar has a bumpy surface.
- Mix the glitter with the Mod Podge on a paper plate.
- Brush a generous amount over the spray paint. This will also help seal the paint.
Let it dry for at least 30 minutes. Place the lid insert in the top, and now you can use them!
Pro Tips
- Vinyl letters are easier to transfer onto another surface with transfer tape. Check out our full tutorial for how to use transfer tape!
- Make sure you look at what size of top you have for your mason jar tumbler. This is particular jar is a wide mouth and any regular sized mason jar accessories will not fit it.
Washing/Care Instructions: Hand Wash ONLY.
When the drink you put in it is very cold or when you wash it, the Mod Podge will start to appear white again. Don't worry, this goes away.
Cost comparison:
- Mason Jars - 2 for $3.00 (glass was half off at Hobby Lobby)
- Spray Paint/Modge Podge/Glitter - already had it, so FREE!
- Straw Lids - similar on Amazon (mine were $2.50 on Etsy)
- Vinyl - $2.00
- Total: $7.50 for two mason jar tumblers!
Below are the printable instructions.

Do you put anything over the vinyl lettering? I would think that with drinks that "sweat" they could start to come off.

Hi! I love this project! I have everything to make it except the vinyl letters. I have searched on Etsy, but could you help me out with more specifics? It would be ideal for your cousin's shop to be back, but if it isn't, what size are those letters? I haven't worked with letters on glass before, so could you direct me to an example of exactly the type of letters you used? (Maybe a link to something on Etsy?) I'm finding that there are upwards of 50 pages on letters, but between not loving the fonts and not knowing what I'm looking for (stickers? size? texture?), I'm at a bit of a loss. Also, I'm not finding much at around the $2 mark, so I must be doing something wrong!
Thanks!

What gold spray paint did you use?

Has anyone figured out how to get the glitter on there without making the jar turn white when it's cold?

I saw these on Etsy, too, but I already have the tumbler and lid and was hoping to find a tutorial - thank you!

Her shop is called a homegrown home but I don't think she is selling right now. She just had a baby. I bet other shops can easily do custom orders though. :-)
