    The Best Cream Cheese Frosting

One of the reasons this frosting is so great, is because it is adaptable. Need a thinner glaze? No problem. The perfect cookie topping flavor and consistency? Done. Want to pipe intricate designs on a cupcake? We got you.

Whatever you are looking for we tell you exactly how to adapt this simple frosting to meet your needs.

    You ready to do this?

the ingredients to make cream cheese frosting on a cement countertop

First step, gather your ingredients. Use unsalted butter, and make sure the butter and the cream cheese are softened for best results.

step by step photos showing how to make cream cheese frosting

Top Left - Add softened butter and cream cheese to a large bowl or stand mixer.

Top Right - Beat until well combined and free of lumps.

Bottom Left - Add in vanilla extract and salt and stir to combine, scraping sides down as needed.

Bottom Right - Gradually add in powdered sugar.

How much powdered sugar should I use?

Powdered sugar will largely determine the thickness of your frosting. For a thinner, more glaze like consistency use 2 cups. I typically use 3 cups for cakes and cookies. If you want the frosting to be sturdier for piping designs etc. you will want to use 4 cups.

Add a little at a time to determine what best suits your needs. If your frosting becomes to thick, add a tablespoon at a time of milk or cream to thin out.
