    Homemade Chex Mix

Love Chex mix but have one or two things you wish they’d just leave out? No problem! Below you will learn just how easy it is to make your own.

My family never loved the dark bagel chips or the breadsticks, and wished there were more nuts and pretzles. I first made this recipe years ago and we have loved it ever since.

A perfect recipe for tailgating, book club, or any party or celebration. It feeds a crowd and is easy to cater to your preferences. We hope you love it as much as we do.

You ready for this easy recipe? Get ready for your new favorite party appetizer!

Step One - Gather your ingredients. I like to do two cups each of my six favorite snacks.

Step Two - Mix your snacks together in a large roasting pan.

Step Three - Meanwhile, melt butter in a small saucepan and add in your Worcestershire sauce and seasonings of choice. Whisk until combined. See below for seasoning and snack options.

Step Four - Pour butter sauce over snacks and stir to combine. Roast in the oven for forty-five minutes, stirring every fifteen minutes.

    Homemade Chex Mix Recipe Tips

    • Use a Variety of Snacks: Chex Mix is all about the combination of textures and flavors. To achieve the best results, use a variety of snacks such as rice Chex, corn Chex, cheerios, nuts, cheese crackers, pretzels etc. This mix provides a diverse texture and taste profile.
    • Experiment with Seasonings: The seasoning is what gives Chex Mix its signature flavor. You can use a traditional recipe with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and seasoned salt, or get creative and experiment with different seasonings like ranch dressing mix, taco seasoning, or curry powder. Adjust the seasonings to suit your taste preferences.
    • Don't Overbake: Overbaking can make your Chex Mix dry and less enjoyable. Follow the recommended baking time in your recipe, and be sure to stir the mix every 15 minutes to ensure even coating of the seasonings. It's better to slightly underbake it and let it cool to achieve the perfect crunch.

How to store Chex Mix Snacks

Storing homemade Chex Mix properly is essential to keep it fresh and crispy. Here's how to store it:

    • Cool Completely: Before storing your homemade Chex Mix, make sure it has cooled completely. Hot or warm Chex Mix can create condensation inside the storage container, which can lead to sogginess.
    • Use Airtight Containers: Transfer the cooled Chex Mix to airtight containers or resealable plastic bags. Airtight containers help keep moisture and air out, preserving the freshness and crispiness of the mix.
    • Room Temperature: Store the airtight containers at room temperature. Homemade Chex Mix can stay fresh for up to two weeks when stored this way. Avoid storing it in the refrigerator, as the cold can make it lose its crunchiness.

    Best Chex Mix FAQs

Here are a few of our commonly asked questions about this homemade Chex mix.

Is it cheaper to make your own Chex Mix?

Making your own Chex Mix can be more cost-effective than buying pre-made Chex Mix from the store, especially if you make it in larger batches. The short answer is that it depends on how many of the ingredients you are having to buy and how much you are making.

We like to make our own when we are feeding a crowd, and we feel like it tastes better. Here are a few other factors that play in.

    - Buying Ingredients in Bulk: When you purchase the individual ingredients for Chex Mix (Chex cereals, pretzels, nuts, seasonings, etc.) in bulk or during sales, you can often get better prices than buying a pre-packaged mix, which may include smaller quantities of each component.
    - Customization: Making your own Chex Mix allows you to customize it according to your preferences and dietary restrictions. You can choose which ingredients to include and how much of each, which can help you save money by excluding expensive or unnecessary items.
    - Less Food Waste: Making your own Chex Mix allows you to use up ingredients you may already have in your pantry, reducing food waste and saving money.

Why is my homemade Chex Mix soggy?

Improper Cooling: If you place the hot Chex Mix into a container while it's still warm, it can create condensation inside the container, leading to sogginess. Always allow your Chex Mix to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container.
Storing in the Refrigerator: Avoid storing homemade Chex Mix in the refrigerator, as the cold and moisture in the fridge can lead to sogginess. Room temperature storage in an airtight container is best.

To Fix: If your Chex Mix has already become soggy, you can try to revive it by spreading it on a baking sheet and heating it in the oven at a low temperature (around 250°F or 120°C) for 10-15 minutes. This can help remove excess moisture and restore some of its crispiness. Just be careful not to overheat it.

Can I freeze homemade chex mix?

We do not recommend freezing homemade Chex mix as it can change the flavor and texture after freezing/thawing.

What is the healthiest part of Chex Mix?

The healthiest part of Chex Mix is typically the whole grain Chex cereals themselves. These cereals, such as rice Chex, corn Chex, and wheat Chex, provide a source of whole grains, which can be a nutritious component of the mix. Whole grains offer dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and energy, making them a healthier option compared to some of the other ingredients in Chex Mix.
However, it's important to keep in mind that the overall healthiness of your Chex Mix depends on the ingredients you choose to include. For example nuts can be a great source of protein and healthy fats. Chex Mix recipes often involve a mix of ingredients, including seasonings, nuts, pretzels, and sometimes even candies or chocolate. These additional ingredients can vary in terms of healthiness.

What flavor is traditional Chex Mix?

Traditional Chex Mix is known for its savory and slightly salty flavor with a hint of umami. The classic or traditional Chex Mix flavor is achieved through a combination of seasonings that typically include:

Worcestershire Sauce: This provides a rich, savory, and slightly tangy flavor to the mix.
Garlic Powder: Adds a mild garlic flavor.
Onion Powder: Adds a subtle oniony note.
Seasoned Salt: Provides a salty and savory element.
