Three skeletons in a Halloween display wearing swimsuits and headpieces posed like they are waving to a crowd.

I have been admiring funny Halloween yard displays for years now, and this year I finally got the supplies I needed and started making my own! The inaugural display I made was inspired by the new Taylor Swift album.

My favorite Halloween displays are funny (not scary) and dressing Skeletons up in showgirl costumes makes me laugh. Hopefully my neighbors agree. Whether they do or not, it's bringing me a lot of joy.

I've learned a lot about what makes Skeleton yard displays way easier so that's what I'm sharing today.

Skeleton Yard Display

If you want to create a funny skeleton yard display you'll need a few things to get started on the right foot.

Materials You Need

Poseable Yard Skeleton

I bought three 5'4" posable skeletons in July, anticipating that the prices would rise when Halloween got closer-- and they did. At the time I purchased them they were under $30 each, but the price fluctuates.

Solar Yard Spotlights

It doesn't do a lot of good if your neighbors can't see your Skeletons in the dark! Put a solar-powered spotlight on them so they can be seen day or night.

Skeleton Stands

Making your posable Skelly stay upright can be a bear, but some simple stands with stakes on the bottom will keep them from falling over. Use zip ties to keep them attached!

Plastic Poster Frame

If you plan to put any type of sign outside with your Skeleton display, a plastic poster frame is a good idea. Keep your handiwork protected from the elements!

Clear Zip Ties

Zip ties are so useful for keeping Skeletons in their poses for your Halloween display. You can also use them for keeping accessories on and securing props in their hands.

Masking Tape

Sometimes you have to use a little tape to keep things in place. Masking tape is the best option because it is strong enough to hold and not too far from the color of the posable skeletons themselves.

Clear Elastic String

While we normally use this elastic for friendship bracelets, it comes in handy for securing headpieces, hats, and props to your funny skeletons. It is stretchy and pretty much invisible.

Swimsuits

I looked at local thrift stores for swimsuits in Orange and Teal. Shop thrift stores, garage sales, or raid your own closets for any swimwear and costumes you need for your yard displays!

Sparkly Plastic Tiara

Use a plastic tiara for the base of the showgirl headpiece.

Dyed Ostrich Feathers

The 'Showgirl' aesthetic often includes feathered headpieces and boas. I got this pack of 8"-10" feathers to make it look a little more luxurious.

Feather Boa

These are not pictured but I wish I had them! A feather boa on a skeleton is always a good idea.

Battery Operated String Lights

String Lights add that extra sparkle - these globe shaped string lights are great because they look like the lights around a poster in a theatre!
