You will love this easy, delicious sweet potato casserole recipe using canned yams, apples and marshmallows!

From the time I was a little girl I looked forward sweet potato casserole the most at Thanksgiving dinner! It is easy to see why! Because this recipe is more like a dessert, the sweet decadence was a special treat for me.

Sweet Potato Casserole

The best part about this recipe though, is how easy it is to throw together! For instance, it is made with canned yams and apples (that are easy to buy pre sliced if you are wanting to save time). Because of it’s relative ease, my sisters and I started helping with this dish at a young age. Plus, it was a fun one to make (and eat) so we never complained!

You can find all our other Thanksgiving favorite recipes here!

Easy Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows

Sweet yam casserole is the perfect complement to all the turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing that typically accompany Thanksgiving dinners!

Even though it is a sweet recipe, yams and apples are packed with nutrients! For this reason you shouldn’t feel bad about eating seconds ;)!

How do you make a sweet potato casserole?

It really is so simple!

  • Gather your ingredients
  • Put drained yams, and peeled and sliced apples in a greased 9×13 baking dish.
  • Add sugar, brown sugar, salt, butter and boiling water in a medium sauce pan and melt together.
  • In separate cup combine cornstarch and cold water until well combined and then add to the sugar mixture. Cook on medium high heat until clear and bubbly. Pour caramel mixture over yams and apples and bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
  • Sprinkle yam casserole with cinnamon, nutmeg and marshmallows and bake an additional 5-10 minutes or until marshmallows are melted and golden brown.

Ingredients

  • 6 16 oz canned yams drained
  • 3 green apples peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3/4 cups cold water
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • mini marshmallows

Instructions

  • Put drained yams, and peeled and sliced apples in a greased 9x13 baking dish.

Notes

You may not need all of the syrup mixture. Start pouring over your apples and yams and stop when you feel that everything has been well coated but it's not too close to the rim of the pan.
Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for 5-7 days.
